Folic acid (folate) is a B vitamin that is only found in vegetables, especially dark green cabbage, spinach and lettuce. The vitamin is easily destroyed during cooking.
Folic acid is needed for protein formation, as folate promotes normal amino acid synthesis. It affects blood formation and the normal function of the immune system. Folate helps reduce tiredness and fatigue and promotes normal psychological functions.
The intake of folic acid in both Finnish men and women is low (Finravinto study 2007, THL). Pregnant women and those planning a pregnancy in particular must ensure sufficient folic acid intake, as folate participates in the cell division process and promotes tissue growth during pregnancy.
Folic acid is used to prevent and treat folate deficiency and hyperhomocysteinemia. People who are or may become pregnant take folic acid to avoid serious birth abnormalities like spina bifida.
Folic acid is also used to treat a variety of other disorders, including depression, stroke, memory loss, and cognitive decline.
According to the nutritional recommendations (VRNK 2005), the recommended folic acid intake for women of childbearing age (18-30 years) and pregnant and lactating women is 400 µg/day (micrograms).
