Another amino acid that the body naturally produces, l-citrulline, is transformed to l-arginine by the kidney. While increasing testosterone levels may be one of its benefits, l-citrulline also improves blood flow and nitric oxide levels, both of which can aid with erectile dysfunction.

As a nitric oxide (NO) enhancer, citrulline malate (CM) has recently been touted as a potential ergogenic aid to both resistance and high-intensity exercise performance, as well as the recovery of muscular performance.

Based on current research, a recommended dose is 3–6 grams per day of L-citrulline or approximately 8 grams per day of citrulline malate.

Some research shows that this may help individuals with erectile dysfunction. One small study showed that half of the men who took an L-citrulline supplement had an 8.3% improvement in erectile dysfunction scores over men who took a placebo.

l-Cit treatment reduced not only neuronal cell death but also capillary loss in the hippocampus area after brain ischaemia. The cerebrovascular protective effect of l-Cit was linked to the restoration of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression in the hippocampus.
