Spirulina is a small freshwater algae that dries to a dark blue-green powder. Spirulina has long been a valuable food source throughout the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East.
Complete protein accounts for more than 60% of spirulina’s weight. It also contains trace minerals including iron, magnesium, calcium, zinc, and potassium, as well as vitamins like vitamin B12 and carotenoids. Spirulina has no cell walls and is thus easily digestible.
Spirulina is shaped like a spiral, as the name suggests. Spirulina’s vivid blue-green colour is attributable to its high leaf-green concentration and the rare blue component phycocyanin.
Only a few countries in the globe have a naturally bright climate suitable for the cultivation of this freshwater algae.
