Additional Information

Vitamin A (retinol, retinoic acid) is a nutrient essential for vision, development, cell division, reproduction, and immunity. Vitamin A has antioxidant effects.

Adequate vitamin A consumption is required to keep skin and hair healthy. This is because vitamin A affects the skin and hair in a dose-dependent manner, with too much or too little having negative consequences.

Retinoid acid, a bioactive metabolite of vitamin A, is a powerful signalling molecule in the brains of both growing and adult animals.

It regulates multiple gene products and influences neurogenesis, neuronal survival, and synaptic plasticity.

Vitamin A (retinol and all trans-retinoic acid) is essential for brain development because it stimulates the differentiation of neural progenitor cells into mature neurones with a complex dendritic arborisation (tree) and numerous connections to other neurones, which collectively form the neural network that organises behaviour.

Because of this critical role, vitamin A is thought to be involved in psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia.
