Brain Health
Body’s response to fighting a viral infection such as COVID-19 can make you sleep more, feel unsteady on your feet, make standing for long periods difficult, as well as affecting your brain health, ability to concentrate and memory.
COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION
Just as energy is required for physical activity, it is also required for mental activity. So in a similar way to easily running out of energy when doing a physical task, some people cannot cope with a mental task. It causes longer periods of mental activity and start to lose concentration and ability to process and retrieve information.
As energy is required for both physical and mental activity, it’s important to make sure that you are not exceeding what you feel comfortable doing and avoiding stressful situations wherever possible..
If you are feeling anxious, or your mood is obviously low, and you are feeling depressed with tearfulness, loss of interest in activities, it’s important to look into strategies that can help manage or reduce anxiety in the long term, like talk therapy or medication.
The way you live, what you eat and drink, and how you treat your body affect your memory as well as your physical health and well-being. Keep your body and mind active and sharp.
Manage your stress. The constant drumbeat of daily stresses such as deadline pressures or petty arguments can certainly distract you and affect your ability to focus and recall. But the bigger problem is an ongoing sense of extreme anxiety—that can lead to memory impairment.
If you don’t have a strategy in place for managing your stress, protecting your memory is one reason to get one. Deep breathing, meditation, yoga, and a “mindful” approach to living can all help.
