Glutathione and NAC
Cysteine, an amino acid, can be found in NAC (N-acetylcysteine). Onions contain NAC naturally, although the plain cysteine amino acid (which has the same effect) is more prevalent in foods like eggs and meat, and just slightly present in broccoli, onions, and whole grain products.
The body’s most crucial use of the amino acid cysteine is as a raw material in the synthesis of glutathione, the body’s most potent antioxidant.
To make glutathione, our body needs three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamine. The surface cells of the respiratory tract contain a very high level of glutathione.
